NALMS 2020 Election Candidates

The 2020 election for officers and directors is underway. Voting in the annual election is an important way for NALMS members to provide input in the management of the Society. Our officers and directors are all volunteers who serve without pay. All members may vote for President-Elect and Secretary. The President-Elect serves for one year in that position after which he or she serves as President for one year and Past-President for one year. 2020 Secchi Dip-In Update

With support from a USEPA Exchange Network grant, NALMS partnered with the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, Gold Systems, and Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies to upgrade the Secchi Dip-In database using the Ambient Water Quality Monitoring System (AWQMS) and Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) Lake Observer mobile app. These existing data entry and database management tools have been customized for Dip-In use and to make data publicly available through the AWQMS database, USEPA’s Water Quality Exchange (WQX), and the Water Quality Portal (WQP), a water quality data clearinghouse. Florida Lake Management Society FLMS 31st Annual Symposium Update After much discussion and input from our members, it is with a heavy heart that we announce we will not be holding our 31st annual symposium in person. But that doesn't mean we won't see you! Your Board is currently working on a plan to roll out our usual technical sessions and workshops as individual webinars. Perry Thomas, NALMS President As the 2020 summer solstice passes, NALMS is responding to new challenges, while keeping an eye on the organization’s bottom line. So far, so good, thanks to teamwork by our staff, conference host committees, board, and larger membership. The Minnesota Host Committee, co-chaired by Anne Wilkinson, Joe Bischoff, and Nancy Schuldt, navigated shifting winds of pandemic precautions during the spring and ultimately decided to postpone their face-to-face NALMS Symposium until 2022. You could become a nominee for a position on the NALMS Board of Directors, to take a more active role in steering the direction of activities that relate to these precious resources. President’s Message — March/ April 2020

Perry Thomas, NALMS President As April draws to a close, the executive committee can share a couple of silver linings found within the pandemic cloud. Before we do, though, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to organizers of the 2020 Symposium in Minnesota. Together with them, we are in a holding pattern as we await input from NALMS members and the meeting venue regarding how best to proceed. COVID-19 and Water

What we know as of April 15, 2020 As the number of reported COVID-19 cases continues to increase across North America, NALMS’ staff and Executive Committee have received questions about the fate of the novel coronavirus in waterways. We are monitoring relevant research findings. So far, most of the information available is specific to drinking water and wastewater. At this time, there is agreement in the public health community that the new coronavirus responds to the same kinds of washing and disinfection treatments used to combat related viruses, such as the virus that caused the 2003 SARS epidemic (SARS-CoV).
