it's NALMS 40th birthday!

World’s Leading Aquatic Scientific Societies Urgently Call for Cuts to Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Dire consequences for freshwater and marine resources without significant and fast action
Bethesda, MD (September 14, 2020) In an unprecedented statement released today, the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS) joined forces with 111 aquatic scientific societies representing more than 80,000 scientists across the world to sound a climate change alarm. The societies call for drastically curtailed global greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of man-made climate change to fish and aquatic ecosystems. Unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions, scientists predict catastrophic impacts to commercial, recreational, and ...
NALMS Statement on Racism and Equality
Dear NALMS members and friends,
During the past week, NALMS' leadership collaborated in writing the following statement. Yesterday, during the June Board of Directors Meeting, members recognized the need to form a Diversity Task Force. We invite NALMS members, partners, and the broader lake management community to read this statement and learn more about our plans for action steps. We will follow up next week with additional resources from NALMS. If anyone is interested in joining the Task Force or sharing ideas, feel free to reach out to me or to the Task Force at diversity@nalms.org.
Respectfully,
Perry Thomas, Ph.D., NALMS President...
RESULTS: Lakes Appreciation Poster Contest
July has been Lakes Appreciation Month for the past 22 years. This spring, we invited elementary, middle, and high school students to submit posters reflecting on how important lakes are to all of us. Submitted artwork will be a big part of NALMS’ celebrations through July.
With nearly 60 entries, our volunteer judges had a tough job deciding our three winners (one per grade category). Entries were judged on creativity and originality, how well they represented Lakes Appreciation Month, and overall presentation. We are excited to share the results with you!
Thank you to all of the amazing artists who sent us their posters!
Celebrate Earth Day the NALMS Way!

- Dr. Douglas Tallamy, University of Delaware, Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology / NALMS 2019 Plenary Speaker
You may be wondering, in these uncertain times, how you can safely and effectively celebrate Earth Day this year. To continue on the theme of our 2019 conference plenary speaker, Dr. Doug Tallamy, we'd like to share some ideas on how to start promoting biodiversity through native plantings, ...

World Water Day 2020: Water and Climate Change
What is World Water Day?
World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of freshwater.
The theme of World Water Day 2020 is water and climate change – and how the two are inextricably linked. For those of us who live, work or play on lakes, we are already seeing the impacts of climate change, from rising water temperatures, loss of winter ice cover, changes in lake stratification, increased evaporation, and more extreme weather events, including droughts and intense rainstorms. Climate change is further complicating already challenging lake protection and ...
