Meet at registration at 9:00 am to depart for Waties Island.
Explore Waties Island with Coastal Carolina! The trip will include highlights of northeastern South Carolina landscape evolution, detail the changing climate and highlight the critical need to consider coastal transition from coast to ocean to watershed. Exploration of Waties Island will include stops on old coast deposits, the Marsh Causey Bridge, the ghost forest on the landward edge of the island and at the beach to detail preservation, hurricane recovery and offshore wind engery production. History: In 1995, a total of 1,105 acres on Waties Island and the adjoining uplands of Little River Neck were deeded to the Coastal Educational Foundation, which became the Anne Tilghman Boyce Coastal Reserve. The Reserve is an outstanding example of an undeveloped complex of ocean frontage, fresh and saltwater marshes, tidal creeks, and upland woods. Surrounded by a rapidly urbanizing environment, it is becoming increasingly significant for research, monitoring and education about the natural coastal habitat.
