North American Lake Management Society Establishes New Student Scholarship Fund

MADISON, WI ‒ Due solely to the generosity and kindness of Life Member, Dr. Kenneth Reckhow, the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Kenneth H. Reckhow Scholarship Fund.

With a unique tie-in to a NALMS tradition and Dr. Reckhow’s personal history with the Society, the scholarship winners will be directly linked with an event that occurs each year at the NALMS annual symposium. Beginning with the 2021 Clean Lakes Classic 5K Run/Walk, one female and one male graduate student participant in the event will be randomly selected to receive $500 for use toward their education.

”We are grateful to Ken for his generous support for NALMS students who share his interest in the lake management profession and an active lifestyle,” said NALMS president Lisa Borre. “With many longtime members like Ken who are at or near retirement age, we hope his gift will also inspire others to consider legacy gifts to help advance the NALMS mission.”

Now a Professor Emeritus at Duke University ‒ Nicholas School of the Environment in Durham, NC, Dr. Reckhow has been a longtime member of NALMS and a staunch supporter of the Society and its mission. He also spearheaded the first-ever Clean Lakes Classic 5K at NALMS’ inaugural meeting in Portland, ME in 1980. Typically held mid-week during the NALMS annual symposium, the 5K fun run has become a lasting tradition that new and returning conference attendees look forward to each year.

“Along with NALMS members, Denny Cooke and Gene Welch, I was part of the pre-NALMS conferences in Madison, Minneapolis, and East Lansing, leading to the 1980 meeting in Portland. Steve Chapra and I established the first shortcourse for NALMS; and of course, there is the Clean Lakes Classic. NALMS helped me grow as a scientist. These are just a few of the great memories that I have, which makes me want to give back to NALMS through this scholarship fund.”
