World Water Day 2018

What is World Water Day?

World Water Day, on March 22 every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

Damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education, and livelihoods.

Importance of Source Water Protection

Source water protection (SWP) is a program, initiated by a water utility, to maintain or enhance water quality in streams, lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater that provide source water for water treatment utilities. Surface water is the source for over 220 million North Americans and a supply of safe and abundant potable water is essential for protection of public health and maintaining the economy.

NALMS supports SWP programs, specifically for lakes and reservoirs. Read our position statement, along with the full white paper, here.
