LakeLine 27-3: Aquatic Nuisance Species

Description

As I write this we are in what the Midwestern meteorologists are calling a “Ring of Fire” – a prolonged extreme hot spell. A visit to one of our local lakes brings immediate and welcome relief from the heat. Others have the same idea as lakes and beaches are crowded with people this time of year.

Other lake visitors are not so welcome. I’m referring to aquatic nuisance species (ANS), the theme of this month’s issue. They may be also called aquatic invasive species (AIS), exotic species, and other terms. Regardless, they are unwanted and unwelcome visitors and residents in many of our lakes.
