Secchi Day Science Fair on Beaver Lake
August 17, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 1:00 pm CDT
FreeGeneral Attendees
The public is invited to attend the FREE 14th annual Secchi Day Science Fair on Beaver Lake from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019, at Prairie Creek Park, five miles east of Rogers, Arkansas, on Hwy. 12. (The address is 9300 N Park Rd, Rogers, AR 72756.) The Science Fair includes activities for all ages, with hands-on water and environmental science education fun, a fire truck, kayak test rides, free healthy snacks in the morning, lots of giveaways and chilled tap water to drink, free lunch (regular hot dogs and vegan), Popsicles and ice cream, as well as Water Fun Facts with Papa Rap.
We have snacks in the morning and lunch beginning at 11 a.m. The activities can keep your whole group busy for a couple of hours prior to lunch, so come early. Prize drawings begin at 12:15 p.m. and you must be present to win (you’ll get a wrist band and then check in at the Drawing Depot to get a drawing ticket when you arrive to qualify you). Prizes include 14 goody bags worth $200 dollars or more each, plus a grand prize (think kayak or another item in that value range). This event is great for scouts working on badges, youth groups, family groups, school kids. Email awilson@bwdh2o.org.
Lake/Boat Volunteers
The event is named for the Secchi Disk, a black and white device lowered into the water to measure clarity. Volunteers with boats help us gather samples that day. This takes about 20-30 minutes, but there’s travel time involved depending on where your sample point is located. Pre-registration well in advance is required. Additionally, you must have a boat (in some instances, sites that need to be sampled may be accessed via a kayak, a canoe or a stand-up paddle-board that is rigged to carry sampling gear and an ice chest). To indicate your interest in volunteering, email Matthew Rich at mrich@bwdh2o.org.
