SUMMARY:2022 Adirondack Lakes Alliance Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Adirondack Lakes Alliance\nPresents their 7th Annual\n2022 Adirondack Lakes Alliance Symposium\n“Coming Together for the Good of our Lakes”\nFriday\, August 5\, 2022\n8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nRegistration Table Opens at 8:00 am\n \n\nTheir first plenary speaker this year will be Chris Mikolajczyk\, the current President of the North American Lake Management Society as well as Senior Aquatic Ecologist at PrincetonHydro. Chris will be presenting: \n“The BIG picture:  How a complete lake and watershed management plan guides the protection or restoration of your lake in both the short and long term.” \nIn the talk he plans cover the nine elements of an EPA plan\, why it’s important to have a plan that identifies issues\, sets goals\, develops potential remediation strategies and evaluates proposed outcomes\,  with an emphasis on aquatic invasive species.  Lastly\, he will cover how in many cases\, grant funding is also dependent upon the existence of an overall lake and watershed management plan. \n\nTheir second presenter\, Dr. Dan Kelting\, is the current Executive Director for the ​Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College\, and and in 2021 was appointed ​by Governor Kathy Hochul to the ​Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force. Dan will speak about current research on the impacts on ground and surface water from winter road maintenance and provide the group with an update on the Road Salt Reduction Task Force plan.​ \n\nTechnical sessions will be organized as a round robin giving you the opportunity to participate in all three topics: \n\nBest Practices for Aquatic Invasive Species Management: regional and local programs\, including a conversation about the new NYS Aquatic Species Spread Prevention Certification Program and using herbicides like ProcellaCOR to reduce the abundance of invasive species and minimize their spread \nOn-site wastewater systems: Inspections\, Impacts\, and Solutions\nCommunity Education and Training: Increasing awareness and participation within your lake association.\n\nOther speakers include Cathy McGlynn\, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation; Joe Thouin\, Environmental Analyst for the Lake George Park Commission; Brian Greene\, ​Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program; local state elected officials\, including Assemblyman Billy Jones; and more to be confirmed.  \nThese round-robin sessions will include short presentations\, and plenty of time for open discussions and questions so be ready to participate! When the Round Robin is completed\, the group will come back together to create a guideline for work in the months ahead\, and the day will finish with an optional social hour\, giving you plenty of time for networking with other lake organizations.

Paddle and safety instructions will be given prior to launching.  Meet at the dock of Lake Lacawac.  Begins at 9:00 a.m.  $10.00/person. Registration limited and required.
