SUMMARY:Online Michigan Inland Lakes Convention
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Michigan Inland Lakes Convention: Conserving Lakes in a Changing Environment has been moved to a virtual format\, September 16-18. The novel coronavirus has greatly impacted the way we work and live\, and we are adapting our Convention to match the fluid environment of our lives during this pandemic. Though we realize there is huge value to the in-person networking that takes place between sessions\, we must prioritize the safety and health of our participants\, partners\, sponsors\, volunteers\, and staff. The new format also has some major benefits\, such as the ability to reach a much larger audience\, archived presentations that will be available to the public\, and significantly decreased cost. \nThere are some unknowns regarding future programming\, but we feel it is in the best interest of everyone involved to make the switch to a virtual program now to ensure a successful event in the fall. We are exploring appropriate formats and platforms for the conference\, and we will be communicating more details regarding programming soon. \nRegistration fees will be dramatically reduced\, but a nominal fee will still be requested to support technical and administrative costs as well as scholarships to support student participation.

SUMMARY:ILMS Webinar: The Importance of Oxbow Lakes with TNC
DESCRIPTION:This month’s ILMS webinar will cover the importance of Oxbow Lakes and some work done by the Nature Conservancy. Oxbow lakes are an important habitat type found along Indiana’s major rivers in southwest Indiana. They are an integral part of a river’s ecology. Many species of riverine fish use oxbows to reproduce or rear young.  Oxbow lakes are also home to many species of rare plants\, and they provide wintering and nesting habitat for waterfowl and songbirds.   \nDespite the ecological importance of oxbow lakes\, little is known about their overall health. As a result\, there have been no conservation strategies developed around this important habitat-type in Indiana.  Oxbow lakes face many threats\, including levees\, ditching\, and field tiling within the lake basins\, agricultural runoff\, and fragmentation of surrounding woodlands.  \nTo establish a baseline of data and develop conservation strategies around these lakes\, we completed an initial ranking process via GIS\, followed by an on-the-ground sampling effort in 2017 including monthly water sampling and in 2018 fish sampling.TNC will share our research results to date and discuss the challenges of developing a conservation strategy for a dynamic and large-scale habitat like oxbow lakes along the lower Wabash River. \nOur speaker this month will be Brad Smith from the Nature Conservancy of Indiana. Brad started his career in conservation working in the Hoosier National Forest on migratory songbirds as an undergraduate at Indiana University. He worked throughout parts of the US and Canada before landing in Southwest Florida working on Sanibel Island doing wetland restoration and land management. He began working for The Nature Conservancy in 2010 as the Director of Land Management for the New Jersey chapter before transferring\, in 2013\, to his current position as the Lower Wabash and Wetlands Program Director for Indiana. His efforts are focused on improving water quality\, expanding floodplain protection\, and improving habitat for migratory birds. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. SUMMARY:Lake Taneycomo Shoreline Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual Lake Taneycomo Cleanup will be Saturday\, September 21\, 2019! \nLast year more than 175 volunteers filled three 20-yard dumpsters with trash weighing over 4 tons and picked up 28 tires! Volunteers were equipped with gloves and trash bags and life jackets. Cleanup teams start at one of three locations; Branson\, Rockaway Beach or Forsyth at Empire Park. They begin at around 9am\, work for 3 – 4  hours by boat and shoreline and then are served lunch. We offer the really cool Stream Team t-shirts and a big thank you to all our wonderful\, hard working volunteers! \nHow do you join this effort?\n\nMark your calendar and plan to be at one of the start locations. Plan to bring a friend!\nChoose a location that you’d like to work from: Branson RV Camp Ground\, Rockaway Beach Park\, Forsyth at Powersite Park.\nSign up below or you can call or email us to register you and your party (only one of your party needs to sign-up and then let us know how many are coming) so we can bring enough supplies and lunch!\nBring your boats! We always need boats to help with the cleanup on Lake Taneycomo since most of the shoreline is not walkable.\nShow up at the location of your choice at 9:00 a.m. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring your “trash picker” if you have one (we’ll also provide these\, but always need more).

DESCRIPTION:The 15th Annual West Fork Cleanup will take place Saturday\, September 26th\, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. To limit the gathering of people\, there will be a check-in window between 8:30 am and 10:00 am for handing out trash bags and gloves at Riverside Park in West Fork. We require that you wear a mask at the check-in. \nRSVP: To help streamline the check-in process\, you must register in advance for this event. If you have a group that would like to volunteer for this event\, you can preregister\, and we can assign you to a site early to reduce the amount of people checking-in. To register\, please email melissa@beaverwatershedalliance.org or call 479-750-8007. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, and after much consideration\, we have decided to cancel the free lunch and music portion of our annual cleanup. SUMMARY:Webinar: Wildfires and Resulting Impacts to Water Bodies Used as Drinking Water Sources
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development and Office of Water invite you to a free webinar Small Systems Monthly Webinar Series.\nDetritus material in forest watersheds is the major terrestrial source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in water bodies used as drinking water sources and is also a fuel that can ignite wildfires. In these watersheds\, hot temperatures and dry conditions increase the likelihood of high-severity wildfires. To help reduce this risk\, low-severity prescribed burning is used as a forest management practice to reduce fuel loads from forest floor detritus material. In either high- or low-severity fires\, DOM exported to source waters from managed watersheds is likely to have different characteristics and treatability compared to DOM exported from unburned watersheds. These potential source water quality changes may require that drinking water utilities adapt their treatment processes to account for these changes. Modeling and decision support tools can help explore treatability and adaptation strategies for these impacted water systems. \nWildfire Impacts on Drinking Water Quality\nThis presentation will provide information on the impacts of high- and low-severity wildfires on dissolved organic matter concentrations in water bodies used as drinking water sources and DBP formation during treatment. \nDecision Support for Drinking Water Utilities Impacted by Wildfire\nThis presentation will discuss watersheds’ response to post-fire sedimentation and will provide information on how water utilities can modify treatment plant operations to avoid disinfection byproducts. The 2012 High Park fire in Fort Collins\, Colorado will be used as a real-world example to demonstrate the methods. \nWho should attend? \nState primacy agencies\, Tribes\, community planners\, technical assistance providers\, academia\, and water systems interested in issues facing community water systems and solutions to help solve them.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Understanding and Managing Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Phosphorus (P) loading from the watershed is a problem for many lakes\, but not just during the year it enters. Long-term inputs accumulate in the sediments under lakes and can be recycled by multiple processes. These legacy P loads can be the dominant source during summer and are linked to the increasing frequency and severity of cyanobacteria blooms. Control of internal loading is a matter of removing the sediment or keeping the P in it from being released\, with several options available.
