DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 4th\, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm (eastern time) the national Source Water Collaborative will host a webinar entitled\, “Updates from NRCS and the Northeast: Partnering to Protect Drinking Water\,” as part of the SWC Learning Exchange on “”SWP Through Conservation Funding.” The webinar agenda will feature the following speakers and topics: \n\nMartin Lowenfish and Dee Carlson of NRCS will present information about the upcoming and updated NRCS bulletin on working with states and water utilities to further define the priority source water protection areas for implementing conservation projects to protect drinking water in each state. This will also include details about how NRCS is accounting for the ten percent 2018 Farm Bill drinking water funding requirement.\nAdam Carpenter of AWWA and Kira Jacobs of EPA Region 1 will highlight their efforts in the Northeast to host “2018 Farm Bill and Source Water Protection” meetings with NRCS\, conservation districts\, state drinking water programs\, and water utilities.

Sustaining the aquatic ecosystems that provide fresh water\, regulate water flow and quality\, and provide habitat for aquatic organisms and biodiversity is thus key to sustaining human welfare and the natural systems that support us. Sustainable solutions—those that work across sectors\, nations\, and generations—will require major transitions in our thinking about water resources and the way they are governed and managed. By proposing a special session\, we hope you’ll help highlight work relevant to sustaining aquatic ecosystems under global change.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Slowing the Spread of Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Advance registration required. \nExcessive algae of many types can cause damage to aquatic ecosystems and create human health issues as harmful algae blooms (HAB). Best known in freshwater are the cyanobacteria\, which can form surface scums\, release toxins\, and adversely alter water quality. Very real costs can be associated with contaminated drinking water\, impaired recreational uses\, loss of fish and wildlife\, reduced property value and decreased tax base. HAB and the causes of them cross geographic and political boundaries and have similar impacts across the USA\, making their management worthy of national attention. HAB are fueled by warmer water and increased nutrient levels\, the latter both from watershed inputs and recycling of long-term legacy inputs within lakes. Monitoring initiatives over the last decade have gained valuable insights and we now have multiple tools for preventing or controlling HAB. Success with watershed management is possible but may be limited by intense land use. Management within lakes is entirely possible through multiple proven technologies. Implementation on a national scale is lagging\, however\, and requires greater support and coordination at the federal level. \nPresenter: Ken Wagner\, Ph.D.\, holds degrees from Dartmouth College and Cornell University\, with his Ph.D. earned in Natural Resource Management in 1985.  He has over 40 years of experience working on a variety of water resources assessment and management projects\, including lake\, reservoir\, river and watershed assessment\, rehabilitation\, and management\, regulatory processes\, and educational programs.  In 2010 he started Water Resource Services\, a small company with a focus on water supply protection and lake management consulting. He is a former President of the North American Lake Management Society and former Editor in Chief of Lake and Reservoir Management\, a peer-reviewed journal.

DESCRIPTION:EPA recently released draft recommendations for developing numeric nutrient water quality criteria for lakes and reservoirs for a 60-day public comment period that ends on July 21\, 2020.
