DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description\n\nScience shows we all have implicit or unconscious biases\, which is part of being human.  Certain implicit biases\, such as racial\, gender or age do cause harm and perpetuate systems that oppress\, exclude and divide us.  Divisions keep us from attracting and retaining top talent\, drawing out the best in each other\, creating and cultivating effective teams\, organizations and a culture of inclusion and race equity. Unaddressed\, it is like missing a leg on a stool that we need to stand on to succeed and be effective in our work.  As leaders we have a responsibility to learn how to improve our knowledge\, skills and competencies to increase our collective impact and better support our colleagues\, organizations and constituents. \nThe path to systems and a culture that are predominantly inclusive and equitable is an iterative journey from unaware to advocate. Every system and organization is made up of individuals so this course focuses on the individual and compliments any organizational training.  There is no one way to travel on the path.  This course provides information\, actions\, a process and resources combined with your intention\, attention and commitment reduce the impact of implicit bias. \n \nThis course is for you if you: \n\n\nAre aware you have a role and are educating yourself how to move forward\nWant to do no harm\nWant to liberate yourself\nDon’t know what to do or where to start\nAre afraid to say or do the wrong thing\nWant to build the skill set to take meaningful action\nWant to be an Aly and build powerful partnerships\n\n\nOutcomes \n\n\nLearn Three Technologies to utilize in this work\nDefine “implicit racial bias”\, how it works and provide examples\n5 tangible steps you can take to Stop implicit racial bias\nPersonal action plan\nResources\, support\, and next steps\n\n\n  \nWorkshop Requirements:\n\n\nPre-Registration is required and covers both sessions. A pre-package will be sent to participants that includes preparation\, more details and resources a week before workshop\, April 3\, 2023.\nRegistration deadline by April 2\, 2023\nFull attendance at both sessions. Two\, 3-hour sessions\, with breaks\, sharing and interaction will occur\, one on Monday\, April 10th and the other on Monday\, April 17th. She currently lives in Portland\, Oregon where she works as a cultural consultant\, racial justice facilitator\, and a core member of the Accountability Collective\, a group of volunteers working toward racial equality for the Portland theatre community. When she is not a facilitator and project manager with Racial Justice from the HEART she is a stage manager and fight choreographer in the Portland theatre community. \nBarb Horn was born and raised in Colorado and currently resides in the southwest corner near Durango. She has 33 years’ experience in water quality monitoring and policy\, data management and with community scientists\, working locally\, regionally\, nationally\, and internationally. She is trained in facilitation and community mediation and as a Racial Justice From the Heart Facilitator\, Master Presenter and a Roger Love Method Voice Coach. DESCRIPTION:Free Webinar:\nCome Hell(s Canyon) or High Water — Methylmercury production\, uptake\, and export from a seasonally anoxic reservoir \nPresenter: Austin Baldwin\, Research Hydrologist with the USGS Idaho Water Science Center in Boise\, Idaho\n\nAbstract: Anoxic conditions within reservoirs related to thermal stratification and oxygen depletion lead to methylmercury (MeHg) production\, a key process governing the uptake of mercury in aquatic food webs. Once formed within a reservoir\, the timing and magnitude of the biological uptake of MeHg and the relative importance of MeHg export in water versus biological compartments remain poorly understood. We examined the relations between the reservoir stratification state\, anoxia\, and the concentrations and export loads of MeHg in aqueous and biological compartments at the outflow locations of two reservoirs of the Hells Canyon Complex (Snake River\, Idaho-Oregon). Results show that (1) MeHg concentrations in filter-passing water\, zooplankton\, suspended particles\, and detritus increased in response to reservoir destratification; (2) zooplankton MeHg strongly correlated with MeHg in filter-passing water during destratification; (3) reservoir anoxia appeared to be a key control on MeHg export; and (4) biological MeHg\, primarily in zooplankton\, accounted for only 5% of total MeHg export from the reservoirs (the remainder being aqueous compartments). These results improve our understanding of the role of biological incorporation of MeHg and the subsequent downstream release from seasonally stratified reservoirs and demonstrate that in-reservoir physical processes strongly influence MeHg incorporation at the base of the aquatic food web. \n \nWebinar Sponsor:

DESCRIPTION:Leveraging Experience to Manage Diverse Lakes\, Landscapes\, and People\nThe Dakota (Sioux) homeland Mni Sóta Maķoce means “land where the waters reflect the clouds.” Nicknamed “Land of 10\,000 Lakes\,” Minnesota really has almost 12\,000 inland basins covering at least 10 acres\, but across the state\, they are mostly rural and rather diverse. Deep\, oligotrophic waters are typical in northeastern boreal forests near Superior\, the world’s largest areal\, freshwater lake. Shallow\, hypereutrophic lakes predominate in southwestern agricultural plains. \nWith about 30 lakes and 700\,000 residents within 64 square miles\, the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul reflect some of the challenges of managing Minnesota’s urban landscapes. Generations of Dakota (Sioux) called the area’s largest and deepest lake Bdé Makhá Ská\, but since the 1820s\, it had been called Lake Calhoun. In 2018\, the federal government officially restored the name\, but the Minnesota Court of Appeals in 2019 reversed the state’s official designation of the indigenous name. DESCRIPTION:Every two years the Michigan Inland Lakes Convention brings together passionate lakeshore owners\, lake scientists\, policymakers\, and conservationists to spark new ideas and inspire stewardship of inland lakes. This year’s convention theme is “Protecting Lakes Today for Tomorrow”\, and it will take place virtually from September 14-16 on Zoom. \nThe three-day event will include more than 45 engaging presentations and workshops focused on specific issues such as fish management\, landscaping near shorelines\, lake protection and governance\, algal blooms\, native freshwater mussels\, communications\, policy\, invasive species\, lake restoration\, and much more. Wednesday and Thursday will also include keynote speakers who are regionally recognized for their contribution to the field of lake science and conservation. \nThe convention is a unique occasion for professionals and lakefront homeowners to learn from prominent lake management and conservation professionals. More importantly\, it is an opportunity to learn best practices for the protection and preservation of Michigan’s inland lakes. \nRegistration is open! Registration for the event is $60\, $15 for students\, and free for speakers. Registration deadline: September 11\, 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Forest Therapy Guide Steve Ruelke for a walk in the woods and an immersion practice called Forest Bathing.  In the 1980s Japanese scientists began searching for ways to minimize all the negative impacts that urbanization was having on individuals and society as a whole. They discovered that a two- to three-hour immersion in which one relaxes and breathes in the natural chemistry of a forest\, can lower blood pressure\, reduce stress levels\, improve mood\, increase restfulness\, and boost one’s immune system. They called this practice “Shinrin-yoku” which literally translates “forest bath\,” the art of taking in the atmosphere of the forest.  Meet at the Environmental Education Center.  Begins at 9:00 a.m.  $5.00/person. DESCRIPTION:The Adirondack Lakes Alliance\nPresents their 7th Annual\n2022 Adirondack Lakes Alliance Symposium\n“Coming Together for the Good of our Lakes”\nFriday\, August 5\, 2022\n8:30 am – 4:00 pm\nRegistration Table Opens at 8:00 am\n \n\nTheir first plenary speaker this year will be Chris Mikolajczyk\, the current President of the North American Lake Management Society as well as Senior Aquatic Ecologist at PrincetonHydro. Chris will be presenting: \n“The BIG picture:  How a complete lake and watershed management plan guides the protection or restoration of your lake in both the short and long term.” \nIn the talk he plans cover the nine elements of an EPA plan\, why it’s important to have a plan that identifies issues\, sets goals\, develops potential remediation strategies and evaluates proposed outcomes\,  with an emphasis on aquatic invasive species.  Lastly\, he will cover how in many cases\, grant funding is also dependent upon the existence of an overall lake and watershed management plan. \n\nTheir second presenter\, Dr. Dan Kelting\, is the current Executive Director for the ​Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College\, and and in 2021 was appointed ​by Governor Kathy Hochul to the ​Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force. Dan will speak about current research on the impacts on ground and surface water from winter road maintenance and provide the group with an update on the Road Salt Reduction Task Force plan.​ \n\nTechnical sessions will be organized as a round robin giving you the opportunity to participate in all three topics: \n\nBest Practices for Aquatic Invasive Species Management: regional and local programs\, including a conversation about the new NYS Aquatic Species Spread Prevention Certification Program and using herbicides like ProcellaCOR to reduce the abundance of invasive species and minimize their spread \nOn-site wastewater systems: Inspections\, Impacts\, and Solutions\nCommunity Education and Training: Increasing awareness and participation within your lake association.\n\nOther speakers include Cathy McGlynn\, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation; Joe Thouin\, Environmental Analyst for the Lake George Park Commission; Brian Greene\, ​Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program; local state elected officials\, including Assemblyman Billy Jones; and more to be confirmed.  \nThese round-robin sessions will include short presentations\, and plenty of time for open discussions and questions so be ready to participate! DESCRIPTION:An annual tradition\, the Light The Lake event will take place on Monday\, July 4 at 10pm in conjunction with a variety of lake-wide July 4th festivities. \nLakefront residents are asked to light their flares\, which last for a duration of 30 minutes\, in an effort to outline the entirety of Chautauqua Lake. \nFlares will be available for purchase at a number of local retailers beginning in June. Proceeds from the flare sale benefit the Chautauqua Lake Association.
