The Borough of Ringwood is situated in the heart of the New Jersey Highlands (which provides drinking water to millions of New Jersey residents) and is home to several public and private lakes that sit within the Ramapo Mountains. In order to take an active role in the management of these natural resources\, within multiple watersheds\, the Borough of Ringwood is the first municipality in the state of New Jersey to take a regional approach to private lake management through a public-private partnership with four lake associations. \nNYSFOLA Board Member\, Town of Nelson NY Supervisor\, and Eatonbrook Lake Association member Jim Cunningham will be talking about the role of local government in lake management using recent experiences and examples from Madison County\, NY.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on July 16\, at 12:30 pm for the third webinar in our “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series\, “The Eagles of Lake Hopatcong.” Get a close-up look at Lake Hopatcong’s resident bald eagles with the “eagle guy\,” Bob Behrent. \nThe bald eagle\, with its snowy-feathered\, brown body\, and hooked yellow beak\, has been the proud national emblem of the United States since 1782. Once endangered\, the bald eagle has become a wildlife success story with rigorous conservation efforts including the restriction of the use of DDT and reintroduction programs. In 2007\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the endangered list. There have been several nesting bald eagles on Lake Hopatcong over the past few years. \nBob has been photographing the eagles on Lake Hopatcong for many years and will share his photographs along with details about these birds of prey including some of their interesting quirks and how an eagle’s nest changes over the years. \nOur “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series was created to share information and discuss topics of interest to our lake community. SUMMARY:Webinar: Lake Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study
DESCRIPTION:Lake Wawasee is the largest glacial lake in Indiana with an area of 3\,060 acres (1\,238 hectares) and a watershed of 24\,498 acres (9\,914 hectares). The watershed is predominantly residential and agriculture. Like other glacial lakes in Indiana\, excess Nitrogen and Phosphorus and suspended sediment are the most prevalent nonpoint source pollutants entering the lake. It is well known these pollutants result in lake hypoxia\, algal blooms\, sedimentation\, and altered lake biota. These patterns of poor water quality in glacial lakes may result in lower property values and/or limited recreational opportunities. While there is a large body of literature relevant to lake trophic status through traditional limnology research\, data that quantifies nutrient and sediment loads entering the lake by sub-watershed is lacking. The Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study (WINS) is a novel experimental design\, started 1 January 2019\, with a gage station located at each of the four major tributaries and the outflow of the lake. Each station is equipped with an automatic water sampler\, pressure transducer\, data logger\, rain gauge\, and temperature probes. Six samples are collected daily April-June and weekly grab samples are collected July-March (N = 580 per gage station/year). A stream discharge rating curve is being calculated for each site and a biological assessment will be calculated once each year. This data rich approach provides Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to target priority restoration/conservation areas\, open opportunities for dialogue and partnerships\, and evaluate the efficacy of conservation initiatives. Early provisional data suggests Phosphorus\, Nitrogen\, and sediment exceeds ecological target values. \nOur speaker will be Dr. Jerry Sweeten. Jerry Sweeten Directed the Asherwood Environmental Science Center in Wabash County for 25 years before completing his Ph.D. at Purdue University under the direction of Anne Spacie.  His work included an examination of the effect of suspended sediment on the early life stages of sight-feeding fishes and research on an early watershed project (Indian-Pine Watershed Research Initiative) focused on nutrient and sediment from agricultural watersheds. In 2004 Jerry took a teaching position at Manchester College where he Directed the Environmental Studies Program.  While at Manchester\, students were involved with multiple watershed projects in the Eel River basin.  Over a ten year period\, four low-head dams were removed from the Eel River (over 1\,100 stream miles reconnected)\, reintroduction of an endangered freshwater mussel species\, research on redside dace\, construction of a two-stage ditch\, and multiple 319 projects focused on reducing nutrient and sediment loads in the Eel River.  Professor Sweeten retired from Manchester College in 2018\, and along with his wife\, Melinda\, and Herb Manifold started Ecosystems Connections Institute (ECI).  Ecosystems Connections Institute Mission: To provide professional environmental consulting and research services where education\, research\, demonstration\, and ecological restoration merge through conservation partnerships. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. DESCRIPTION:For those looking to get out on the water with a paddle! We are celebrating Lakes Appreciation Month with a Virtual Padding Race. Grab a canoe\, kayak\, SUP board\, or a raft and enjoy the outdoors. How many hours will you paddle in a week? How about the entire month of July? \nCompete with your fellow watershed stewards to rack up as many hours as you can using the self-propelled watercraft of your choice. Just do what you normally do\, or if you want to win\, maybe a bit more. This competition will feature weekly prizes and a grand prize package at the end of the month. We’ve got lots of great BWA swag we’re giving away – dry bags for your paddling trips\, coolers for a picnic on the shore\, trucker hats to make you look cool\, and watershed map bandanas to keep you cool. \nEmail Carrie with your weekly paddling time to enter and watch our Facebook page for the leader board! DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nJake’s Pack 5K Run-Walk is held in memory of Michael “Jake” Burkhardt\, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on January 25\, 2016.  Jake was active young man who enjoyed hiking\, campfires\, listening to music and spending time with his friends.  Jake will be remembered as a kind and happy person with a great smile.  He always knew when someone needed help and was always there to help.  The race was started by Jake’s family and friends as a way to keep Jake’s memory alive by supporting what was important to him.  Proceeds will be used to support the Michael “Jake” Burkhardt Memorial Student Leadership Fund which supports scholarships for high school students looking to pursue degrees in science and environmental studies.   \nHOW TO RUN/WALK THE RACE\nStarting on Friday July 10th at 12:00 am\, run/walk your 5K race (3.1 miles) at any point before the 10 pm cut off on Sunday July 12th and submit your results using the Submit Results button above.  Track your run with running apps such as Garmin\, Strava and MapMyRun etc. Your race should not have negative elevation gain. You are permitted to run the race on a treadmill at least at a 1% incline.
