SUMMARY:Partnering to Mitigate Harmful Algal Blooms across the Midwest and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:It’s summer – and that means for a lot of communities harmful algal blooms (HABs)\, or blue green algae\, are top of mind. Tune in to this month’s The Current webinar as we hear from the Network’s Mitigating HABs team as they discuss their soon to be released white paper cataloging Extension and state-based algal bloom programs and resources and outlining recommendations for HAB messaging and resources moving forward. Team members will discuss how their unique partnership between each Water Resources Research Institute and Extension throughout the region is allowing them to transform the latest HAB research results into accessible information and tangible algal bloom tools people can use\, and the lessons they have learned along the way.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Monitoring: Connecting Volunteer Data to the Water Quality Portal
DESCRIPTION:NWQMC Webinar Series \nPresented by\nBarb Horn\, Colorado Parks & Wildlife\nJohn Dawes\, Chesapeake Commons\nLaura Shumway\, Environmental Protection Agency \nThe webinar is free; pre-registration is required. Please login 10 minutes early. \nThe goal of most volunteer monitoring programs is to ensure that well-trained volunteers collect data of known quality and use data used for change. In the study design process (where programs think through monitoring questions\, data use goals\, and the who\, what\, where\, why of monitoring) thinking through data management and data sharing is a crucial step. Data sharing into central location is often a challenge for volunteer monitoring programs but there are tools available to facilitate data input into the U.S. Water Quality Portal. This webinar will share a 101 overview on the WQP\, tools to facilitate data sharing\, and highlight a state example of volunteer input into the federal repository.

SUMMARY:Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater is vital to human life and societal well-being (Baron et al. 2001)\, but its quality and quantity are being threatened at the global and local scales (Gleick 2014). Indeed\, recognition of a growing global freshwater crisis resulted in the United Nations calling 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation. Water provides numerous ecosystem services (i.e.\, benefits that nature provides free of charge to society)\, including drinking water\, pollution purification\, navigation\, agriculture\, fisheries\, aesthetics\, and habitat (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005). \nThere is no panacea when it comes to public education\, as evidenced by the current debate over charter and schools of choice (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/vouchers/choice/). New ideas and approaches need to be developed. To that end\, GVSU faculty members from Dance (Hannah Seidel)\, Music (Sookkyung Cho)\, and AWRI (Al Steinman) have joined forces to collaborate on a novel approach to raise awareness about freshwater. \nDr. Al Steinman has collaborated with GVSU faculty members Dr. Sookkyung Cho\, and Hannah Seidel to create “Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance”. \nSub-Merge features the performances of five newly commissioned musical compositions created by Teddy Niedermaier\, Daniel Temkin\, and Jeremy Crosmer\, which complement piano compositions by Gabriel Faure and Dmitri Shostakovich. Musicians included Sookyung Cho (piano: GVSU)\, Hong-Yi Mo (violin: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, Jeremy Crosmer (cello: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, and GVSU students Natalie Evancoe\, Courtney Saunders\, Zach Forsleff\, and Rebekah Shomsky as the FOURtepiano 8-hand ensemble. \nDance choreography was created by Hannah Seidel with professional dancers Courtney Drasner and Kristy Kuhn from NYC\, as well as GVSU students Olivia Karenas\, Ross Lindhout\, Ryan Schwaar\, and Victoria VanderPlas. \nScience narration was written by Al Steinman with oration by Roger Ellis.

SUMMARY:Wetland Construction: Principles\, Planning and Design
DESCRIPTION:As state and federal wetland mitigation standards evolve away from an acre-for-acre approach to a focus on replacing wetland functions\, your understanding of the wetland’s “wet part” has never been more critical. \nThis class serves as an introduction to the fundamentals of functional design and provides the means to rapidly assess the distribution of hydrology on your site and create useable hydrographs for presentation of your wetland design. \nBuilding on the student’s understanding of wetland functions\, this course will also guide you through the many factors required to plan and design a functional wetland. Through classroom lessons and field training at a constructed wetland complex\, learn “real world” applications with an emphasis on two key components that drive success: DDT (depth\, duration & timing) of site hydrology and the landscape position. \nFeatured Topics \nHydrogeomorphology: The importance of landscape position and where water is coming from \nWater Budget Calculation: Water inputs/outputs and TR-55 runoff curves \nThe Thornthwaite Method: One method for calculating evapotranspiration \nEstimating Stream Flow and Producing Basic Hydrographs: Create useable hydrographs for presentation of your wetland design
