SUMMARY:ILMS Webinar: The Importance of Oxbow Lakes with TNC
DESCRIPTION:This month’s ILMS webinar will cover the importance of Oxbow Lakes and some work done by the Nature Conservancy. Oxbow lakes are an important habitat type found along Indiana’s major rivers in southwest Indiana. They are an integral part of a river’s ecology. Many species of riverine fish use oxbows to reproduce or rear young.  Oxbow lakes are also home to many species of rare plants\, and they provide wintering and nesting habitat for waterfowl and songbirds.   \nDespite the ecological importance of oxbow lakes\, little is known about their overall health. As a result\, there have been no conservation strategies developed around this important habitat-type in Indiana.  Oxbow lakes face many threats\, including levees\, ditching\, and field tiling within the lake basins\, agricultural runoff\, and fragmentation of surrounding woodlands.  \nTo establish a baseline of data and develop conservation strategies around these lakes\, we completed an initial ranking process via GIS\, followed by an on-the-ground sampling effort in 2017 including monthly water sampling and in 2018 fish sampling.TNC will share our research results to date and discuss the challenges of developing a conservation strategy for a dynamic and large-scale habitat like oxbow lakes along the lower Wabash River. \nOur speaker this month will be Brad Smith from the Nature Conservancy of Indiana. Brad started his career in conservation working in the Hoosier National Forest on migratory songbirds as an undergraduate at Indiana University. He worked throughout parts of the US and Canada before landing in Southwest Florida working on Sanibel Island doing wetland restoration and land management. He began working for The Nature Conservancy in 2010 as the Director of Land Management for the New Jersey chapter before transferring\, in 2013\, to his current position as the Lower Wabash and Wetlands Program Director for Indiana. His efforts are focused on improving water quality\, expanding floodplain protection\, and improving habitat for migratory birds. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. SUMMARY:Online Michigan Inland Lakes Convention
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Michigan Inland Lakes Convention: Conserving Lakes in a Changing Environment has been moved to a virtual format\, September 16-18. The novel coronavirus has greatly impacted the way we work and live\, and we are adapting our Convention to match the fluid environment of our lives during this pandemic. Though we realize there is huge value to the in-person networking that takes place between sessions\, we must prioritize the safety and health of our participants\, partners\, sponsors\, volunteers\, and staff. The new format also has some major benefits\, such as the ability to reach a much larger audience\, archived presentations that will be available to the public\, and significantly decreased cost. \nThere are some unknowns regarding future programming\, but we feel it is in the best interest of everyone involved to make the switch to a virtual program now to ensure a successful event in the fall. We are exploring appropriate formats and platforms for the conference\, and we will be communicating more details regarding programming soon. \nRegistration fees will be dramatically reduced\, but a nominal fee will still be requested to support technical and administrative costs as well as scholarships to support student participation.

SUMMARY:Alliance Speaker Series - Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:The recurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) or “CyanoHABs” in freshwater environments in Arkansas has inspired teams of scientists and regulators across multiple disciplines to work together to achieve a broader understanding of the occurrence\, impacts and management of HABs on water bodies used for drinking water\, agriculture\, irrigation\, fishing\, and recreational purposes. \nAll water bodies require primary producers\, such as phytoplankton and filamentous algae\, to make up the base of the food chain. However\, concerns arise when water bodies become dominated by one or a few species. \nThis presentation will cover HABs in Arkansas\, including case studies on Lake Hamilton and Lake Fayetteville\, and will cover the Harmful Algal Bloom Management Plan for Arkansas\, including recommended actions. Our guest speakers are Brie Olsen\, Ecologist Coordinator in the Office of Water at the Division of Environmental Quality and Dr. Brian Haggard\, Executive Director with the Arkansas Water Resources Center. \nThis presentation is free and open to the public. We encourage water quality professionals\, municipal and county staff\, utility managers\, design and landscape professionals\, science and engineering communities\, property managers and landowners to attend. \nRegistration is free\, but required to attend. SUMMARY:ILMS Webinar - IDEM/IDNR Waterways Collaboration Process and New Online Tool
DESCRIPTION:This month’s ILMS webinar will cover the new Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Waterways Collaboration process and online web tool.  A brief overview of the IDEM Section 401 Program will also be provided\, but the primary focus of the presentation will be on the tool and how to run through it. \nOur speaker this month will be Heather Parsons. Heather serves as the Office of Water Quality Special Projects Coordinator.  Specifically\, Heather spends most of her time currently following federal rule changes and analyzing how they affect the state of Indiana and specifically those focused on wetlands and streams.  Heather was heavily involved in the development of the Waterways joint application project done with the IDNR.  Heather has been with IDEM for nine years and worked in the program as a summer intern for three summers prior to full time employment.  Heather holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Science focused on Applied Ecology and Water Resources and an undergraduate degree in Geography with a focus on GIS and Environmental Sciences.  Heather previously managed the northeast portion of the state for IDEM covering Hamilton County to the eastern state line and north to the northern state line. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. SUMMARY:Algal Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:PhycoTech Workshop\n\n\n\nAttend this exclusive\, one full week of training on taxonomy\, identification and ecology of algae. Each day will consist of lectures on various topics including methodology\, algal divisions\, recent changes to taxonomy\, HABS\, and differences in approaches to taxonomic classification. There will be microscope sessions in which participants will view preserved and live specimens while receiving hands‐on training in identification. Participants are encouraged to bring their own samples as well.  No direct experience with algae required\, but workshop targets participants with backgrounds in biology and scientific methods. \nAll attendees will receive a manual that covers algal methods\, identification\, ecology\, and management – prepared by the instructor and based on three decades of\nprofessional experience. Sessions start at 8:00 a.m. and run through 5:30 p.m. each day and are held at the PhycoTech training facility in beautiful St. Joseph\, Michigan on the shore of Lake Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Princeton Hydro\, LLC’s Senior Project Manager in Aquatics Chris Mikolajczyk will present “A Regional Based Approach to the Management of Lakes in the Borough of Ringwood\, NJ”. The Borough of Ringwood is situated in the heart of the New Jersey Highlands (which provides drinking water to millions of New Jersey residents) and is home to several public and private lakes that sit within the Ramapo Mountains. In order to take an active role in the management of these natural resources\, within multiple watersheds\, the Borough of Ringwood is the first municipality in the state of New Jersey to take a regional approach to private lake management through a public-private partnership with four lake associations. \nNYSFOLA Board Member\, Town of Nelson NY Supervisor\, and Eatonbrook Lake Association member Jim Cunningham will be talking about the role of local government in lake management using recent experiences and examples from Madison County\, NY.

DESCRIPTION:The objective of this webinar is to break down the process of monitoring cyanobacteria and nuisance algae into basic steps from field to lab. We will discuss what monitoring strategies have been effective for Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority\, and how the lab interprets the data to determine when and how much to treat. The goal of this webinar is to demonstrate how to prevent cyanobacteria and algae blooms since treatment is difficult and expensive – and in some cases\, ineffective.
