SUMMARY:Winter Lake Monitoring: Life and Limnology Under the Ice
DESCRIPTION:Are lakes as quiet and lifeless when frozen over as they seem? Join Lakes Environmental Association Research Director Ben Peierls to find out how the traditional view of wintertime lake dormancy is being revised. He will talk about recent winter research\, including work at LEA\, that has given us a new perspective on annual lake cycles\, even as climate warming threatens whether lakes ice over at all. Enjoy a multimedia look at life and water quality under the ice and how we go about measuring that. \nSpeaker \nDr. Ben Peierls \n\n\n\nResearch Director @Lakes Environmental Association\nDr. Ben Peierls\, Maine Lake Science Center research director\, grew up on Long Island\, New York and spent many summers visiting family at Sand Pond in Denmark. Ben and his brother maintain a camp on the lake to this day. Since getting a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University thirty years ago\, he has been actively involved as a technician\, graduate student\, and postdoctoral researcher in aquatic ecosystem research\, including studies of lakes\, large rivers\, and estuaries. His focus has been on phytoplankton\, microbial ecology\, and general water quality issues\, such as eutrophication. Ben received an M.S. and a Ph.D. in marine sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was involved in the field work and data management for several long-term estuarine monitoring programs. When not studying aquatic systems\, he enjoys sailing on and swimming in them\, as well as playing ultimate and performing music.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL NALMS 2020 Symposium
DESCRIPTION:After careful consideration and in consultation with our partners and planning team\, NALMS has decided we will not be able to hold our 2020 annual symposium in Minneapolis as planned. Instead we will hold a virtual symposium during those dates in keeping with the best interest of the health and well-being of our attendees\, sponsors\, exhibitors\, and staff. \nWith the uncertainty of the past several months\, we understand that some prospective presenters were not able to submit an abstract for the 2020 conference but may now be interested in participating in a virtual meeting presentation format. We are reopening abstract and special session submissions until July 31. \nIf you have already submitted an abstract\, there is no need to resubmit. We will be in contact with authors to confirm their interest in continued participation. \nWe are still in the planning stages of this new format\, but we expect the program to include: \n\nPlenary sessions with live Q&A.\nDaily technical presentations with live Q&A.\n“On your own sessions\,” view recorded presentations on your timetable and ask the authors questions.\nPoster Session with “lightning” presentations.\nTalks and posters will be available to attendees on demand during the conference week\, no need to miss any talks of interest due to overlapping times.\nDaily meet & greet opportunities and a virtual hospitality room.\nVirtual exhibits from new and long time NALMS Corporate Members\, Affiliates\, and Nonprofits.\nVirtual Clean Lakes Classic 5K Run/Walk.\n\nStay tuned for more detailed information on the program\, registration\, awards\, NALMS Membership Meeting\, and more! \nNALMS 2020

SUMMARY:Introduction to Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning in R
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide a gentle introduction to the arcane world of R\, covering topics useful for those with no prior exposure to the software as well as those interested in learning more advanced applications. This free\, open source system for statistical computation and graphics has become the de facto standard for ecologists with more than half of published scientific papers now using the software. Given its flexibility and widespread adoption by the scientific community\, R training has broad applicability for environmental scientists and lake managers working in all contexts requiring data management\, statistical analysis\, and graphical presentation of data. R allows precise documentation of steps taken in data processing in order to provide reproducible results in alignment with the Open Science movement. Graphical user interfaces and integrated development environments now make R much more user friendly for beginners (i.e.\, more point-and-click and less command line). Users have contributed over 15\,000 packages to R\, greatly extending its capabilities. Have your laptop handy\, if possible\, as the workshop will include a hands-on portion.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Understanding and Managing Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Phosphorus (P) loading from the watershed is a problem for many lakes\, but not just during the year it enters. Long-term inputs accumulate in the sediments under lakes and can be recycled by multiple processes. These legacy P loads can be the dominant source during summer and are linked to the increasing frequency and severity of cyanobacteria blooms. Control of internal loading is a matter of removing the sediment or keeping the P in it from being released\, with several options available. This webinar will explore internal P loading\, its link to cyanobacteria blooms\, and methods to reduce internal P loading. \nPresenters:\nAlan Steinman\, Ph.D.\, Grand Valley State University\, Michigan\nKen Wagner\, Ph.D.\,  Water Resource Services\, Massachusetts\nMiquel Lurling\, Ph.D.\, Wageningen University\, The Netherlands \nEach presentation will be about 20 minutes in length\, the remainder of the time will be for discussion and questions. \nPlease register for Understanding and Managing Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes on Sep 30\, 2020 10:30 AM EDT at:\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9113236565325676304 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Wildfires and Resulting Impacts to Water Bodies Used as Drinking Water Sources
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development and Office of Water invite you to a free webinar Small Systems Monthly Webinar Series.\nDetritus material in forest watersheds is the major terrestrial source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in water bodies used as drinking water sources and is also a fuel that can ignite wildfires. In these watersheds\, hot temperatures and dry conditions increase the likelihood of high-severity wildfires. To help reduce this risk\, low-severity prescribed burning is used as a forest management practice to reduce fuel loads from forest floor detritus material. In either high- or low-severity fires\, DOM exported to source waters from managed watersheds is likely to have different characteristics and treatability compared to DOM exported from unburned watersheds. These potential source water quality changes may require that drinking water utilities adapt their treatment processes to account for these changes. Modeling and decision support tools can help explore treatability and adaptation strategies for these impacted water systems. \nWildfire Impacts on Drinking Water Quality\nThis presentation will provide information on the impacts of high- and low-severity wildfires on dissolved organic matter concentrations in water bodies used as drinking water sources and DBP formation during treatment. \nDecision Support for Drinking Water Utilities Impacted by Wildfire\nThis presentation will discuss watersheds’ response to post-fire sedimentation and will provide information on how water utilities can modify treatment plant operations to avoid disinfection byproducts. The 2012 High Park fire in Fort Collins\, Colorado will be used as a real-world example to demonstrate the methods. \nWho should attend? \nState primacy agencies\, Tribes\, community planners\, technical assistance providers\, academia\, and water systems interested in issues facing community water systems and solutions to help solve them.

SUMMARY:Lake Taneycomo Shoreline Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual Lake Taneycomo Cleanup will be Saturday\, September 21\, 2019! \nLast year more than 175 volunteers filled three 20-yard dumpsters with trash weighing over 4 tons and picked up 28 tires! Volunteers were equipped with gloves and trash bags and life jackets. Cleanup teams start at one of three locations; Branson\, Rockaway Beach or Forsyth at Empire Park. They begin at around 9am\, work for 3 – 4  hours by boat and shoreline and then are served lunch. We offer the really cool Stream Team t-shirts and a big thank you to all our wonderful\, hard working volunteers! \nHow do you join this effort?\n\nMark your calendar and plan to be at one of the start locations. Plan to bring a friend!\nChoose a location that you’d like to work from: Branson RV Camp Ground\, Rockaway Beach Park\, Forsyth at Powersite Park.\nSign up below or you can call or email us to register you and your party (only one of your party needs to sign-up and then let us know how many are coming) so we can bring enough supplies and lunch!\nBring your boats! We always need boats to help with the cleanup on Lake Taneycomo since most of the shoreline is not walkable.\nShow up at the location of your choice at 9:00 a.m. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring your “trash picker” if you have one (we’ll also provide these\, but always need more).
