SUMMARY:Webinar: Towns and Lakes Working Together Through Zoning and Water Quality Issues
DESCRIPTION:Princeton Hydro\, LLC’s Senior Project Manager in Aquatics Chris Mikolajczyk will present “A Regional Based Approach to the Management of Lakes in the Borough of Ringwood\, NJ”. The Borough of Ringwood is situated in the heart of the New Jersey Highlands (which provides drinking water to millions of New Jersey residents) and is home to several public and private lakes that sit within the Ramapo Mountains. In order to take an active role in the management of these natural resources\, within multiple watersheds\, the Borough of Ringwood is the first municipality in the state of New Jersey to take a regional approach to private lake management through a public-private partnership with four lake associations. \nNYSFOLA Board Member\, Town of Nelson NY Supervisor\, and Eatonbrook Lake Association member Jim Cunningham will be talking about the role of local government in lake management using recent experiences and examples from Madison County\, NY.

SUMMARY:Webinar: HAB Monitoring in the Southeast
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this webinar is to break down the process of monitoring cyanobacteria and nuisance algae into basic steps from field to lab. We will discuss what monitoring strategies have been effective for Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority\, and how the lab interprets the data to determine when and how much to treat. The goal of this webinar is to demonstrate how to prevent cyanobacteria and algae blooms since treatment is difficult and expensive – and in some cases\, ineffective.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Eagles of Lake Hopatcong
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on July 16\, at 12:30 pm for the third webinar in our “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series\, “The Eagles of Lake Hopatcong.” Get a close-up look at Lake Hopatcong’s resident bald eagles with the “eagle guy\,” Bob Behrent. \nThe bald eagle\, with its snowy-feathered\, brown body\, and hooked yellow beak\, has been the proud national emblem of the United States since 1782. Once endangered\, the bald eagle has become a wildlife success story with rigorous conservation efforts including the restriction of the use of DDT and reintroduction programs. In 2007\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the endangered list. There have been several nesting bald eagles on Lake Hopatcong over the past few years. \nBob has been photographing the eagles on Lake Hopatcong for many years and will share his photographs along with details about these birds of prey including some of their interesting quirks and how an eagle’s nest changes over the years. \nOur “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series was created to share information and discuss topics of interest to our lake community. There is no cost to attend\, however\, registration is required. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Don’t forget your lunch!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Lake Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study
DESCRIPTION:Lake Wawasee is the largest glacial lake in Indiana with an area of 3\,060 acres (1\,238 hectares) and a watershed of 24\,498 acres (9\,914 hectares). The watershed is predominantly residential and agriculture. Like other glacial lakes in Indiana\, excess Nitrogen and Phosphorus and suspended sediment are the most prevalent nonpoint source pollutants entering the lake. It is well known these pollutants result in lake hypoxia\, algal blooms\, sedimentation\, and altered lake biota. These patterns of poor water quality in glacial lakes may result in lower property values and/or limited recreational opportunities. While there is a large body of literature relevant to lake trophic status through traditional limnology research\, data that quantifies nutrient and sediment loads entering the lake by sub-watershed is lacking. The Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study (WINS) is a novel experimental design\, started 1 January 2019\, with a gage station located at each of the four major tributaries and the outflow of the lake. Each station is equipped with an automatic water sampler\, pressure transducer\, data logger\, rain gauge\, and temperature probes. Six samples are collected daily April-June and weekly grab samples are collected July-March (N = 580 per gage station/year). A stream discharge rating curve is being calculated for each site and a biological assessment will be calculated once each year. This data rich approach provides Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to target priority restoration/conservation areas\, open opportunities for dialogue and partnerships\, and evaluate the efficacy of conservation initiatives. Early provisional data suggests Phosphorus\, Nitrogen\, and sediment exceeds ecological target values. \nOur speaker will be Dr. Jerry Sweeten. Jerry Sweeten Directed the Asherwood Environmental Science Center in Wabash County for 25 years before completing his Ph.D. at Purdue University under the direction of Anne Spacie.  His work included an examination of the effect of suspended sediment on the early life stages of sight-feeding fishes and research on an early watershed project (Indian-Pine Watershed Research Initiative) focused on nutrient and sediment from agricultural watersheds. In 2004 Jerry took a teaching position at Manchester College where he Directed the Environmental Studies Program.  While at Manchester\, students were involved with multiple watershed projects in the Eel River basin.  Over a ten year period\, four low-head dams were removed from the Eel River (over 1\,100 stream miles reconnected)\, reintroduction of an endangered freshwater mussel species\, research on redside dace\, construction of a two-stage ditch\, and multiple 319 projects focused on reducing nutrient and sediment loads in the Eel River.  Professor Sweeten retired from Manchester College in 2018\, and along with his wife\, Melinda\, and Herb Manifold started Ecosystems Connections Institute (ECI).  Ecosystems Connections Institute Mission: To provide professional environmental consulting and research services where education\, research\, demonstration\, and ecological restoration merge through conservation partnerships. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. Attendance for this and future webinars is free for ILMS members\, and $10 for non-members. If you would like to attend multiple webinars\, we welcome you to become a member. Membership benefits include special events\, access to the members only web page\, and a discounted annual conference membership. \nThis month’s ILMS webinar is being sponsored by: \n \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Slowing the Spread of Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Advance registration required. \nExcessive algae of many types can cause damage to aquatic ecosystems and create human health issues as harmful algae blooms (HAB). Best known in freshwater are the cyanobacteria\, which can form surface scums\, release toxins\, and adversely alter water quality. Very real costs can be associated with contaminated drinking water\, impaired recreational uses\, loss of fish and wildlife\, reduced property value and decreased tax base. HAB and the causes of them cross geographic and political boundaries and have similar impacts across the USA\, making their management worthy of national attention. HAB are fueled by warmer water and increased nutrient levels\, the latter both from watershed inputs and recycling of long-term legacy inputs within lakes. Monitoring initiatives over the last decade have gained valuable insights and we now have multiple tools for preventing or controlling HAB. Success with watershed management is possible but may be limited by intense land use. Management within lakes is entirely possible through multiple proven technologies. Implementation on a national scale is lagging\, however\, and requires greater support and coordination at the federal level. \nPresenter: Ken Wagner\, Ph.D.\, holds degrees from Dartmouth College and Cornell University\, with his Ph.D. earned in Natural Resource Management in 1985.  He has over 40 years of experience working on a variety of water resources assessment and management projects\, including lake\, reservoir\, river and watershed assessment\, rehabilitation\, and management\, regulatory processes\, and educational programs.  In 2010 he started Water Resource Services\, a small company with a focus on water supply protection and lake management consulting. He is a former President of the North American Lake Management Society and former Editor in Chief of Lake and Reservoir Management\, a peer-reviewed journal.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Managed Nitrate Addition for Lake Water Quality Enhancement
DESCRIPTION:The California Lake Management Society is hosting this free webinar on managed nitrate addition to enhance water quality in lakes and reservoirs. \nNitrate is a significant water pollutant with potential environmental impacts ranging from eutrophication to health risks to infants. But under certain circumstances\, nitrate may enhance water quality through a number of mechanisms\, including regulation of redox potential and suppression of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. In this webinar\, Dr. Beutel will explore a range of case studies in which nitrate addition enhanced surface water quality including purposeful addition of nitrate to lakes to repress internal phosphorus loading\, enhance organic matter oxidation\, and impede bottom-water accumulation of methyl mercury; incidental addition of nitrate from point and non-point discharges to reservoirs and lakes; and nitrate addition to lakes to affect phytoplankton and zooplankton composition.

SUMMARY:Webinar: CyAN Mobile App Training
DESCRIPTION:Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (HABs)\, which can appear in water bodies across the country\, are an indicator of poor water quality and can potentially cause serious environmental and human and aquatic health effects. Historically\, monitoring these HABs has been labor-intensive and limited due to cost\, time\, and logistical constraints. \nEPA developed the CyAN app to help local and state water quality managers make faster and better-informed management decisions related to cyanobacterial blooms. It provides an easy to use\, customizable interface for accessing algal bloom satellite data for over 2\,000 of the largest lakes and reservoirs in the United States. \nThe CyAN mobile app is free and available for download on Google PlayTM. It is designed for use on AndroidTM devices and is compatible with versions 4.2-9.0. It is currently being developed as a web-based app\, which will be compatible with most devices. \nThe webinar will address the needs of new users as well as be a refresher for veteran users. The first half of the webinar will provide a general overview of the app including what it is used for\, why and how it was developed\, and who it was designed for. The second portion of the webinar will be a step-by-step tutorial on how to use the CyAN app followed by a Q&A session. \nWho should attend? State and local governments\, tribes\, utility professionals\, and others interested in early detection of algal blooms in U.S. water bodies. \nFor registration questions:\ntools_resources_webinar@epa.gov \nWebinar series coordinator: Lisa Matthews\, Senior Advisor and State Liaison matthews.lisa@epa.gov
