DESCRIPTION:Phosphorus (P) loading from the watershed is a problem for many lakes\, but not just during the year it enters. Long-term inputs accumulate in the sediments under lakes and can be recycled by multiple processes. These legacy P loads can be the dominant source during summer and are linked to the increasing frequency and severity of cyanobacteria blooms. Control of internal loading is a matter of removing the sediment or keeping the P in it from being released\, with several options available. DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development and Office of Water invite you to a free webinar Small Systems Monthly Webinar Series.\nDetritus material in forest watersheds is the major terrestrial source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in water bodies used as drinking water sources and is also a fuel that can ignite wildfires. In these watersheds\, hot temperatures and dry conditions increase the likelihood of high-severity wildfires. To help reduce this risk\, low-severity prescribed burning is used as a forest management practice to reduce fuel loads from forest floor detritus material. In either high- or low-severity fires\, DOM exported to source waters from managed watersheds is likely to have different characteristics and treatability compared to DOM exported from unburned watersheds. These potential source water quality changes may require that drinking water utilities adapt their treatment processes to account for these changes. Modeling and decision support tools can help explore treatability and adaptation strategies for these impacted water systems. \nWildfire Impacts on Drinking Water Quality\nThis presentation will provide information on the impacts of high- and low-severity wildfires on dissolved organic matter concentrations in water bodies used as drinking water sources and DBP formation during treatment. \nDecision Support for Drinking Water Utilities Impacted by Wildfire\nThis presentation will discuss watersheds’ response to post-fire sedimentation and will provide information on how water utilities can modify treatment plant operations to avoid disinfection byproducts. The 2012 High Park fire in Fort Collins\, Colorado will be used as a real-world example to demonstrate the methods. \nWho should attend? \nState primacy agencies\, Tribes\, community planners\, technical assistance providers\, academia\, and water systems interested in issues facing community water systems and solutions to help solve them.

SUMMARY:ILMS Webinar: The Importance of Oxbow Lakes with TNC
DESCRIPTION:This month’s ILMS webinar will cover the importance of Oxbow Lakes and some work done by the Nature Conservancy. Oxbow lakes are an important habitat type found along Indiana’s major rivers in southwest Indiana. They are an integral part of a river’s ecology. Many species of riverine fish use oxbows to reproduce or rear young.  Oxbow lakes are also home to many species of rare plants\, and they provide wintering and nesting habitat for waterfowl and songbirds.   \nDespite the ecological importance of oxbow lakes\, little is known about their overall health. As a result\, there have been no conservation strategies developed around this important habitat-type in Indiana.  Oxbow lakes face many threats\, including levees\, ditching\, and field tiling within the lake basins\, agricultural runoff\, and fragmentation of surrounding woodlands.  \nTo establish a baseline of data and develop conservation strategies around these lakes\, we completed an initial ranking process via GIS\, followed by an on-the-ground sampling effort in 2017 including monthly water sampling and in 2018 fish sampling.TNC will share our research results to date and discuss the challenges of developing a conservation strategy for a dynamic and large-scale habitat like oxbow lakes along the lower Wabash River. \nOur speaker this month will be Brad Smith from the Nature Conservancy of Indiana. Brad started his career in conservation working in the Hoosier National Forest on migratory songbirds as an undergraduate at Indiana University. He worked throughout parts of the US and Canada before landing in Southwest Florida working on Sanibel Island doing wetland restoration and land management. He began working for The Nature Conservancy in 2010 as the Director of Land Management for the New Jersey chapter before transferring\, in 2013\, to his current position as the Lower Wabash and Wetlands Program Director for Indiana. His efforts are focused on improving water quality\, expanding floodplain protection\, and improving habitat for migratory birds. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. DESCRIPTION:The recurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) or “CyanoHABs” in freshwater environments in Arkansas has inspired teams of scientists and regulators across multiple disciplines to work together to achieve a broader understanding of the occurrence\, impacts and management of HABs on water bodies used for drinking water\, agriculture\, irrigation\, fishing\, and recreational purposes. \nAll water bodies require primary producers\, such as phytoplankton and filamentous algae\, to make up the base of the food chain. However\, concerns arise when water bodies become dominated by one or a few species. \nThis presentation will cover HABs in Arkansas\, including case studies on Lake Hamilton and Lake Fayetteville\, and will cover the Harmful Algal Bloom Management Plan for Arkansas\, including recommended actions. Once endangered\, the bald eagle has become a wildlife success story with rigorous conservation efforts including the restriction of the use of DDT and reintroduction programs. In 2007\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the endangered list. There have been several nesting bald eagles on Lake Hopatcong over the past few years. \nBob has been photographing the eagles on Lake Hopatcong for many years and will share his photographs along with details about these birds of prey including some of their interesting quirks and how an eagle’s nest changes over the years. \nOur “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series was created to share information and discuss topics of interest to our lake community. SUMMARY:Webinar: Lake Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study
DESCRIPTION:Lake Wawasee is the largest glacial lake in Indiana with an area of 3\,060 acres (1\,238 hectares) and a watershed of 24\,498 acres (9\,914 hectares). The watershed is predominantly residential and agriculture. Like other glacial lakes in Indiana\, excess Nitrogen and Phosphorus and suspended sediment are the most prevalent nonpoint source pollutants entering the lake. It is well known these pollutants result in lake hypoxia\, algal blooms\, sedimentation\, and altered lake biota. These patterns of poor water quality in glacial lakes may result in lower property values and/or limited recreational opportunities. While there is a large body of literature relevant to lake trophic status through traditional limnology research\, data that quantifies nutrient and sediment loads entering the lake by sub-watershed is lacking. The Wawasee Inlet Nutrient Study (WINS) is a novel experimental design\, started 1 January 2019\, with a gage station located at each of the four major tributaries and the outflow of the lake. Each station is equipped with an automatic water sampler\, pressure transducer\, data logger\, rain gauge\, and temperature probes. Six samples are collected daily April-June and weekly grab samples are collected July-March (N = 580 per gage station/year). A stream discharge rating curve is being calculated for each site and a biological assessment will be calculated once each year. This data rich approach provides Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to target priority restoration/conservation areas\, open opportunities for dialogue and partnerships\, and evaluate the efficacy of conservation initiatives. Early provisional data suggests Phosphorus\, Nitrogen\, and sediment exceeds ecological target values. \nOur speaker will be Dr. Jerry Sweeten. Jerry Sweeten Directed the Asherwood Environmental Science Center in Wabash County for 25 years before completing his Ph.D. at Purdue University under the direction of Anne Spacie.  His work included an examination of the effect of suspended sediment on the early life stages of sight-feeding fishes and research on an early watershed project (Indian-Pine Watershed Research Initiative) focused on nutrient and sediment from agricultural watersheds. In 2004 Jerry took a teaching position at Manchester College where he Directed the Environmental Studies Program.  While at Manchester\, students were involved with multiple watershed projects in the Eel River basin.  Over a ten year period\, four low-head dams were removed from the Eel River (over 1\,100 stream miles reconnected)\, reintroduction of an endangered freshwater mussel species\, research on redside dace\, construction of a two-stage ditch\, and multiple 319 projects focused on reducing nutrient and sediment loads in the Eel River.  Professor Sweeten retired from Manchester College in 2018\, and along with his wife\, Melinda\, and Herb Manifold started Ecosystems Connections Institute (ECI).  Ecosystems Connections Institute Mission: To provide professional environmental consulting and research services where education\, research\, demonstration\, and ecological restoration merge through conservation partnerships. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon. DESCRIPTION:EPA recently released draft recommendations for developing numeric nutrient water quality criteria for lakes and reservoirs for a 60-day public comment period that ends on July 21\, 2020.
