National Algae Association\, is the first non-profit algae association to focus on education\, production and algae bloom remediation trade association in the world\, made up of commercially-minded algae researchers\, producers\, remediation and equipment companies in the US and throughout the world\, would like to extend an invitation to attend or become a sponsor of the Algae Bloom Remediation Workshop. \nNAA has invited commercially-minded algae bloom and red tide researchers\, remediation technology and equipment companies to discuss differences between algae blooms created by phosphorous and nitrogen and toxic algae blooms (HAB’s) to educate and address potential algae bloom remediation technology solutions that are proven to work outside the lab\, are scalable and economically viable. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

SUMMARY:Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater is vital to human life and societal well-being (Baron et al. 2001)\, but its quality and quantity are being threatened at the global and local scales (Gleick 2014). Indeed\, recognition of a growing global freshwater crisis resulted in the United Nations calling 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation. Water provides numerous ecosystem services (i.e.\, benefits that nature provides free of charge to society)\, including drinking water\, pollution purification\, navigation\, agriculture\, fisheries\, aesthetics\, and habitat (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005). \nThere is no panacea when it comes to public education\, as evidenced by the current debate over charter and schools of choice (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/vouchers/choice/). New ideas and approaches need to be developed. To that end\, GVSU faculty members from Dance (Hannah Seidel)\, Music (Sookkyung Cho)\, and AWRI (Al Steinman) have joined forces to collaborate on a novel approach to raise awareness about freshwater. \nDr. Al Steinman has collaborated with GVSU faculty members Dr. Sookkyung Cho\, and Hannah Seidel to create “Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance”. \nSub-Merge features the performances of five newly commissioned musical compositions created by Teddy Niedermaier\, Daniel Temkin\, and Jeremy Crosmer\, which complement piano compositions by Gabriel Faure and Dmitri Shostakovich. Musicians included Sookyung Cho (piano: GVSU)\, Hong-Yi Mo (violin: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, Jeremy Crosmer (cello: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, and GVSU students Natalie Evancoe\, Courtney Saunders\, Zach Forsleff\, and Rebekah Shomsky as the FOURtepiano 8-hand ensemble. \nDance choreography was created by Hannah Seidel with professional dancers Courtney Drasner and Kristy Kuhn from NYC\, as well as GVSU students Olivia Karenas\, Ross Lindhout\, Ryan Schwaar\, and Victoria VanderPlas. \nScience narration was written by Al Steinman with oration by Roger Ellis.

The event will be held at the exquisite Church Landing Inn at Mills Falls in Meredith along the shoreline of Lake Winnipesaukee on the evening of Thursday\, May 31\, and all-day on Friday\, June 1. The two-day event will draw approximately 250 attendees. \nThe event will kick-off with a fascinating presentation—“Summer Camps on New Hampshire’s Lakes: Roots of An Iconic American Experience”—given by the curatorial team from the Museum of the White Mountains. \nKen Wagner\, President and Manager of Water Resource Services\, and former President of the North American Lake Management Society\, will kick off Friday’s session with a dynamic keynote address “Climate Change and Lakes: What You Really Need to Know.”

DESCRIPTION:Our upcoming 42nd annual meeting to be held January 25-27\, 2018 at the Hilton College Station and Conference Center in College Station\, Texas. TCAFS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to:\nThe conservation\, development and wise use of fisheries and aquatic resources\, promotion of all branches of fisheries and aquatic sciences\, and exchange and dissemination of knowledge about fishes\, fisheries\, and aquatic natural resources. \nEach year\, students and professionals are invited to submit abstracts for presenting oral presentations and posters that highlight fisheries projects and research. A major highlight of our meeting is to present talented students with scholarships as well as awards to fellow members for their achievements at our annual banquet.
