SUMMARY:Online Michigan Inland Lakes Convention
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Michigan Inland Lakes Convention: Conserving Lakes in a Changing Environment has been moved to a virtual format\, September 16-18. The novel coronavirus has greatly impacted the way we work and live\, and we are adapting our Convention to match the fluid environment of our lives during this pandemic. Though we realize there is huge value to the in-person networking that takes place between sessions\, we must prioritize the safety and health of our participants\, partners\, sponsors\, volunteers\, and staff. The new format also has some major benefits\, such as the ability to reach a much larger audience\, archived presentations that will be available to the public\, and significantly decreased cost. \nThere are some unknowns regarding future programming\, but we feel it is in the best interest of everyone involved to make the switch to a virtual program now to ensure a successful event in the fall. We are exploring appropriate formats and platforms for the conference\, and we will be communicating more details regarding programming soon. \nRegistration fees will be dramatically reduced\, but a nominal fee will still be requested to support technical and administrative costs as well as scholarships to support student participation.

SUMMARY:Algal Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:PhycoTech Workshop\n\n\n\nAttend this exclusive\, one full week of training on taxonomy\, identification and ecology of algae. Each day will consist of lectures on various topics including methodology\, algal divisions\, recent changes to taxonomy\, HABS\, and differences in approaches to taxonomic classification. There will be microscope sessions in which participants will view preserved and live specimens while receiving hands‐on training in identification. Participants are encouraged to bring their own samples as well.  No direct experience with algae required\, but workshop targets participants with backgrounds in biology and scientific methods. \nAll attendees will receive a manual that covers algal methods\, identification\, ecology\, and management – prepared by the instructor and based on three decades of\nprofessional experience. Sessions start at 8:00 a.m. and run through 5:30 p.m. each day and are held at the PhycoTech training facility in beautiful St. Joseph\, Michigan on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Sustaining the aquatic ecosystems that provide fresh water\, regulate water flow and quality\, and provide habitat for aquatic organisms and biodiversity is thus key to sustaining human welfare and the natural systems that support us. Sustainable solutions—those that work across sectors\, nations\, and generations—will require major transitions in our thinking about water resources and the way they are governed and managed. By proposing a special session\, we hope you’ll help highlight work relevant to sustaining aquatic ecosystems under global change.

DESCRIPTION:The Iowa Water Conference is IWC’s largest outreach and collaboration effort with a dozen planning partners. The conference is designed to bring together multi-disciplinary organizations and institutions to discuss relevant water issues in Iowa. The inaugural event in 2006 combined several existing conferences with the purpose of coordinating research and management efforts. Today’s conference draws over 400 attendees and still strives to encompass the whole of Iowa’s water landscape including expanding into realms of education and outreach\, conservation\, policy and regulations. \nThe conference website\, which houses the agenda\, registration\, and conference logistics\, is www.iowawaterconference.org. National Algae Association\, is the first non-profit algae association to focus on education\, production and algae bloom remediation trade association in the world\, made up of commercially-minded algae researchers\, producers\, remediation and equipment companies in the US and throughout the world\, would like to extend an invitation to attend or become a sponsor of the Algae Bloom Remediation Workshop. \nNAA has invited commercially-minded algae bloom and red tide researchers\, remediation technology and equipment companies to discuss differences between algae blooms created by phosphorous and nitrogen and toxic algae blooms (HAB’s) to educate and address potential algae bloom remediation technology solutions that are proven to work outside the lab\, are scalable and economically viable. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

SUMMARY:Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater is vital to human life and societal well-being (Baron et al. 2001)\, but its quality and quantity are being threatened at the global and local scales (Gleick 2014). Indeed\, recognition of a growing global freshwater crisis resulted in the United Nations calling 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation. Water provides numerous ecosystem services (i.e.\, benefits that nature provides free of charge to society)\, including drinking water\, pollution purification\, navigation\, agriculture\, fisheries\, aesthetics\, and habitat (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005). \nThere is no panacea when it comes to public education\, as evidenced by the current debate over charter and schools of choice (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/vouchers/choice/). New ideas and approaches need to be developed. To that end\, GVSU faculty members from Dance (Hannah Seidel)\, Music (Sookkyung Cho)\, and AWRI (Al Steinman) have joined forces to collaborate on a novel approach to raise awareness about freshwater. \nDr. Al Steinman has collaborated with GVSU faculty members Dr. Sookkyung Cho\, and Hannah Seidel to create “Sub-Merge: Raising Water Awareness Through Science\, Music\, and Dance”. \nSub-Merge features the performances of five newly commissioned musical compositions created by Teddy Niedermaier\, Daniel Temkin\, and Jeremy Crosmer\, which complement piano compositions by Gabriel Faure and Dmitri Shostakovich. Musicians included Sookyung Cho (piano: GVSU)\, Hong-Yi Mo (violin: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, Jeremy Crosmer (cello: Detroit Symphony Orchestra)\, and GVSU students Natalie Evancoe\, Courtney Saunders\, Zach Forsleff\, and Rebekah Shomsky as the FOURtepiano 8-hand ensemble. \nDance choreography was created by Hannah Seidel with professional dancers Courtney Drasner and Kristy Kuhn from NYC\, as well as GVSU students Olivia Karenas\, Ross Lindhout\, Ryan Schwaar\, and Victoria VanderPlas. \nScience narration was written by Al Steinman with oration by Roger Ellis.
