This is a great opportunity to learn how YOU can improve YOUR forest to increase wildlife diversity\, reduce stormwater issues\, and improve the aesthetic appeal of your forests. \nOur speakers include: Raven Lawson\, Watershed Protection Manager with Central Arkansas Water\, Chas McCoy\, Watershed Specialist with The Nature Conservancy\, and Hugh Lumpkin\, Private Lands Biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. \nRaven is an expert in the role healthy forests play in protecting water quality\, and how to manage forests to promote the diverse understory vegetation necessary to filter stormwater and promote watershed vitality. Chas has extensive experience managing forests for conservation\, including one of the most ecologically diverse forests in the entire state\, the Rob and Melani Walton Preserve. Hugh is an expert in promoting our native game and non-game species in forestlands\, which require healthy plant diversity to thrive. \nThis year\, we are providing this educational short class for private landowners of forested lands online via webinar\, which will be recorded and made available for future participants on our Alliance YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Alliance Speaker Series - Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:The recurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) or “CyanoHABs” in freshwater environments in Arkansas has inspired teams of scientists and regulators across multiple disciplines to work together to achieve a broader understanding of the occurrence\, impacts and management of HABs on water bodies used for drinking water\, agriculture\, irrigation\, fishing\, and recreational purposes. \nAll water bodies require primary producers\, such as phytoplankton and filamentous algae\, to make up the base of the food chain. However\, concerns arise when water bodies become dominated by one or a few species. \nThis presentation will cover HABs in Arkansas\, including case studies on Lake Hamilton and Lake Fayetteville\, and will cover the Harmful Algal Bloom Management Plan for Arkansas\, including recommended actions. Our guest speakers are Brie Olsen\, Ecologist Coordinator in the Office of Water at the Division of Environmental Quality and Dr. Brian Haggard\, Executive Director with the Arkansas Water Resources Center. \nThis presentation is free and open to the public. We encourage water quality professionals\, municipal and county staff\, utility managers\, design and landscape professionals\, science and engineering communities\, property managers and landowners to attend. \nRegistration is free\, but required to attend. A closing SET SAIL CELEBRATION is also scheduled online for the final evening of the auction and will feature local talent\, surprise guests\, and much more.  We hope this year’s event continues to bring together (online!) many of our same lake residents and supporters\, along with new friends we look forward to meeting. \nThere is no cost to join the party. We hope attendees will be inspired to bid on auction items and donate to support our many initiatives. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on July 16\, at 12:30 pm for the third webinar in our “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series\, “The Eagles of Lake Hopatcong.” Get a close-up look at Lake Hopatcong’s resident bald eagles with the “eagle guy\,” Bob Behrent. \nThe bald eagle\, with its snowy-feathered\, brown body\, and hooked yellow beak\, has been the proud national emblem of the United States since 1782. Once endangered\, the bald eagle has become a wildlife success story with rigorous conservation efforts including the restriction of the use of DDT and reintroduction programs. In 2007\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the endangered list. There have been several nesting bald eagles on Lake Hopatcong over the past few years. \nBob has been photographing the eagles on Lake Hopatcong for many years and will share his photographs along with details about these birds of prey including some of their interesting quirks and how an eagle’s nest changes over the years. \nOur “Thirst for Knowledge” lunch-and-learn webinar series was created to share information and discuss topics of interest to our lake community. DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nJake’s Pack 5K Run-Walk is held in memory of Michael “Jake” Burkhardt\, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on January 25\, 2016.  Jake was active young man who enjoyed hiking\, campfires\, listening to music and spending time with his friends.  Jake will be remembered as a kind and happy person with a great smile.  He always knew when someone needed help and was always there to help.  The race was started by Jake’s family and friends as a way to keep Jake’s memory alive by supporting what was important to him.  Proceeds will be used to support the Michael “Jake” Burkhardt Memorial Student Leadership Fund which supports scholarships for high school students looking to pursue degrees in science and environmental studies.   \nHOW TO RUN/WALK THE RACE\nStarting on Friday July 10th at 12:00 am\, run/walk your 5K race (3.1 miles) at any point before the 10 pm cut off on Sunday July 12th and submit your results using the Submit Results button above.  Track your run with running apps such as Garmin\, Strava and MapMyRun etc. Your race should not have negative elevation gain. You are permitted to run the race on a treadmill at least at a 1% incline.
