SUMMARY:What Kind of Lake Is That? Putting Maine’s Lakes Into Categories for Better Water Quality Assessments and Protections
DESCRIPTION:Maine has thousands of lakes\, and all are unique. However\, many lakes share traits that help lake managers\, watershed organizations\, and researchers compare and evaluate them. This is especially important for lake assessments\, which often compare a lake’s condition to the condition of reference lakes from minimally-disturbed watersheds. By determining which natural attributes of lakes and their watersheds have the strongest influence on lake condition\, we can place lakes into categories that define what the conditions of certain types of lakes should be. These categories will help managers place lake data in the proper context for better evaluation and planning. This talk will be about how lake types were developed for Maine lakes\, and how these types may be applied to lake assessment and protection. \nSpeakers \nJeremy Deeds \n\n\n\nAquatic Ecologist @Maine Department of Environmental Protection\nJeremy Deeds has been an aquatic ecologist for the Lakes Assessment Section of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) since 2014. He has worked on water quality projects in the northeast U.S. over the past 20 years allowing him to build relationships and share research ideas with other experts. A native Mainer\, Jeremy grew up fishing and boating on the lakes of Maine and feels fortunate to work on studying and helping to protect them. At DEP\, he studies various aspects of Maine lakes\, including the measurement of changes in water quality over time and the role of shoreland development in shallow-water habitat quality. He lives in Topsham with his family\, who all enjoy getting out on the water as much as possible.

We will review key features distinguishing the major algal groups: cyanobacteria\, chlorophytes\, diatoms\, dinoflagellates\, red algae\, euglenophytes\, etc. and spend some time looking at specimens under the scope. \nPart 2:  Workshop Description: This workshop has a special focus on harmful and nuisance algae (focusing on cyanobacteria) in freshwater systems. We will dive into the ecology of both planktonic and benthic members of this group\, while identifying major problematic taxa (genera and species). Together\, we will identify morphological features that are used in discern these genera.  Depending on time\, aspects of toxicity and control will also be discussed.

Join Lakes Environmental Association Research Director Ben Peierls to find out how the traditional view of wintertime lake dormancy is being revised. He will talk about recent winter research\, including work at LEA\, that has given us a new perspective on annual lake cycles\, even as climate warming threatens whether lakes ice over at all. Enjoy a multimedia look at life and water quality under the ice and how we go about measuring that. \nSpeaker \nDr. Ben Peierls \n\n\n\nResearch Director @Lakes Environmental Association\nDr. Ben Peierls\, Maine Lake Science Center research director\, grew up on Long Island\, New York and spent many summers visiting family at Sand Pond in Denmark. Ben and his brother maintain a camp on the lake to this day. Since getting a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University thirty years ago\, he has been actively involved as a technician\, graduate student\, and postdoctoral researcher in aquatic ecosystem research\, including studies of lakes\, large rivers\, and estuaries. His focus has been on phytoplankton\, microbial ecology\, and general water quality issues\, such as eutrophication. Ben received an M.S. and a Ph.D. in marine sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was involved in the field work and data management for several long-term estuarine monitoring programs. When not studying aquatic systems\, he enjoys sailing on and swimming in them\, as well as playing ultimate and performing music.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning in R
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide a gentle introduction to the arcane world of R\, covering topics useful for those with no prior exposure to the software as well as those interested in learning more advanced applications. This free\, open source system for statistical computation and graphics has become the de facto standard for ecologists with more than half of published scientific papers now using the software. Given its flexibility and widespread adoption by the scientific community\, R training has broad applicability for environmental scientists and lake managers working in all contexts requiring data management\, statistical analysis\, and graphical presentation of data. R allows precise documentation of steps taken in data processing in order to provide reproducible results in alignment with the Open Science movement. Graphical user interfaces and integrated development environments now make R much more user friendly for beginners (i.e.\, more point-and-click and less command line). Users have contributed over 15\,000 packages to R\, greatly extending its capabilities. Have your laptop handy\, if possible\, as the workshop will include a hands-on portion.

DESCRIPTION:Attention Shoreline Cleanup Volunteers! \nIt’s time for the 2nd Annual Bull Shoals Lake Cleanup! \nOzarks Water Watch and 38 Paddle Co. would like to invite you to help keep our beautiful lake beautiful! \nThe event starts at 9:00 a.m. on October 19\, 2019 at the Hwy. K Campground near K-Dock Marina.  Teams will work their way downstream and upstream\, then return to the start location at the Campground for lunch at 12:00. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED AND IS AS SIMPLE AS FILLING OUT THE FORM BELOW\, OR BY CALLING RONNA WITH OZARKS WATER WATCH AT 417-739-5001. \nRemember to dress for the task! For your safety\, open toed shoes are not recommended. Bring a life jacket if you have one\, and an old dip net or your favorite trash-grabber (some grabbers will be available for use on a first come\, first serve basis due to limited quantities). If you have a favorite pair of work gloves\, please bring them but gloves and trash bags will be provided. All volunteers will receive a t-shirt and lunch for helping make this event a success! Culligan Water will be providing drinking water for the volunteers\, so bring your own reusable water bottle to limit additional trash. If you don’t have one\, water bottles will be provided for you. \nBull Shoals Lake has very little walkable shoreline\, so boats are needed to help clean up the shoreline. If you have a boat you can use\, bring it! Tarps will be available to help keep boats clean for those who do not have their own tarps. Some paddle boards and kayaks or canoes will be available to experienced paddlers. Motorized boats will help carry walkers to various locations.

There are so many ways to enjoy lakes\, and promoting the health of lake ecosystems results in better experiences and more enjoyment for both us and their inhabitants.  We are welcoming abstracts from everyone on a wide variety of lake topics\, honoring our inclusiveness theme by honoring your interests\, work programs\, and research on lakes and their watersheds.  You may submit an abstract for either a presentation or poster HERE\, with a deadline of August 17th for your initial proposal.  Sessions will be crafted based on the submissions we receive\, but have generally included topics such as recent noxious weeds updates\, nutrient and pollution reduction reports\, problem algae information and recent research\, and watershed impacts on lake food webs. \nThe photo contest will be back again this year in a slightly different form: this year’s submissions will be featured on our website!  Send us your best pictures of the amazing lakes you enjoy and manage.

DESCRIPTION:Phosphorus (P) loading from the watershed is a problem for many lakes\, but not just during the year it enters. Long-term inputs accumulate in the sediments under lakes and can be recycled by multiple processes. These legacy P loads can be the dominant source during summer and are linked to the increasing frequency and severity of cyanobacteria blooms. Volunteers were equipped with gloves and trash bags and life jackets. Cleanup teams start at one of three locations; Branson\, Rockaway Beach or Forsyth at Empire Park. They begin at around 9am\, work for 3 – 4  hours by boat and shoreline and then are served lunch. We offer the really cool Stream Team t-shirts and a big thank you to all our wonderful\, hard working volunteers! \nHow do you join this effort?\n\nMark your calendar and plan to be at one of the start locations. Plan to bring a friend!\nChoose a location that you’d like to work from: Branson RV Camp Ground\, Rockaway Beach Park\, Forsyth at Powersite Park.\nSign up below or you can call or email us to register you and your party (only one of your party needs to sign-up and then let us know how many are coming) so we can bring enough supplies and lunch!\nBring your boats! We always need boats to help with the cleanup on Lake Taneycomo since most of the shoreline is not walkable.\nShow up at the location of your choice at 9:00 a.m. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring your “trash picker” if you have one (we’ll also provide these\, but always need more).

SUMMARY:ILMS Webinar: The Importance of Oxbow Lakes with TNC
DESCRIPTION:This month’s ILMS webinar will cover the importance of Oxbow Lakes and some work done by the Nature Conservancy. Oxbow lakes are an important habitat type found along Indiana’s major rivers in southwest Indiana. They are an integral part of a river’s ecology. Many species of riverine fish use oxbows to reproduce or rear young.  Oxbow lakes are also home to many species of rare plants\, and they provide wintering and nesting habitat for waterfowl and songbirds.   \nDespite the ecological importance of oxbow lakes\, little is known about their overall health. As a result\, there have been no conservation strategies developed around this important habitat-type in Indiana.  Oxbow lakes face many threats\, including levees\, ditching\, and field tiling within the lake basins\, agricultural runoff\, and fragmentation of surrounding woodlands.  \nTo establish a baseline of data and develop conservation strategies around these lakes\, we completed an initial ranking process via GIS\, followed by an on-the-ground sampling effort in 2017 including monthly water sampling and in 2018 fish sampling.TNC will share our research results to date and discuss the challenges of developing a conservation strategy for a dynamic and large-scale habitat like oxbow lakes along the lower Wabash River. \nOur speaker this month will be Brad Smith from the Nature Conservancy of Indiana. Brad started his career in conservation working in the Hoosier National Forest on migratory songbirds as an undergraduate at Indiana University. He worked throughout parts of the US and Canada before landing in Southwest Florida working on Sanibel Island doing wetland restoration and land management. He began working for The Nature Conservancy in 2010 as the Director of Land Management for the New Jersey chapter before transferring\, in 2013\, to his current position as the Lower Wabash and Wetlands Program Director for Indiana. His efforts are focused on improving water quality\, expanding floodplain protection\, and improving habitat for migratory birds. \nThis webinar is part of an on-going ILMS webinar series\, new webinars to be held the third Wednesday of every month at noon.
