| The Texas River and Reservoir
Management Society (TRRMS) and The University of
Texas at Austin are hosting a Symposium and Conference
in Austin, Texas on May 18th and 19th, 2006 at the UT Space
Center, which is located near the Pickle Research Campus
on the north side of Austin in the MCC Building (Address: 3925 W.
Braker Lane, Austin, TX 78759). The combined cost of the Symposium
and Conference is $55 for those registering before April
29th and $65 thereafter. Cost for the Conference alone
is $35 before April 29th and $45 thereafter.
All registrations include a complimentary one-year membership
to TRRMS. Students registering before April 29th may attend
the conference for $15 or both the conference and symposium for
$25, but they must present proof that they are registered in school
for the spring semester. See the Registration
Form for more details.
Space for the Symposium and Conference is limited, so please send
in your abstracts, registration forms and fees early.
The Symposium “Emerging Technologies for Research on Rivers
and Reservoirs” has been chosen in recognition of the modern
methods being used today to answer questions about aquatic organisms
and ecosystems that were difficult or impossible to answer in the
past using historical methods. These include new techniques in genetics,
physiology, cytology, water quality, hydrology, hydraulics, and
systems ecology, just to name a few of the scientific and engineering
disciplines experiencing tremendous growth and advancement using
technologies such as information science, remote sensing, geographic
information systems (GIS), global positioning satellites (GPS),
numerical modeling, and a constantly changing array of new instrumentation.
This will be an invited session--abstract submittals on
this topic are welcome through the extended deadline of April 7th,
with the presentations placed in either the symposium or general
sessions.
The Symposium will begin at 8:30 am (registration
begins at 8:00 am) and conclude at 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 18th.
Catch the wave! An informal reception will follow from 6:00-9:00
pm at the nearby Sam’s Boat Restaurant, which is
located across the street behind the Hampton Inn and within walking
distance (cash bar and great menu are available at Happy Hour prices).
The broad focus of the 2006 TRRMS Annual Conference on
“Management of Texas Rivers and Reservoirs” has produced
a wide range of excellent presentations including a mini-symposium
of its own exploring “Nutrient Biocriteria Assessment Tools” and
including topical presentations on “Tiered Aquatic Life Use (TALU)
Methods,” “NDS Periphytometers,” and related materials. Other presentations
in the concurrent sessions will cover nutrients and toxics, biological
monitoring and new developments in fluvial geomorphology and instream
flow studies, among a range of scientific and engineering presentations
too varied to list here.
The Annual Conference will be held Friday, May 19th, beginning
at 9:00 am (registration begins at 8:30 am) with
concurrent sessions running throughout the day. Be there or be behind
the curve!

The Texas River and Reservoir Management Society (TRRMS)
serves as the Texas Chapter of the North American Lake Management
Society (NALMS). TRRMS’s goal is to promote and encourage
the understanding, protection, conservation and management of reservoir
and riverine ecosystems and their watersheds. TRRMS was initially
organized at a meeting held March 5, 1993, and was accepted as a
state chapter of NALMS at their December 1993 meeting in Seattle.
All Conference and Symposium abstracts will be posted on the TRRMS
web page by April 21st.
