LAKES APPRECIATION MONTH 2013
In May 2013 NALMS will sent a letter to each US state Governor requesting a proclamation recognizing the importance of lakes in their state and declaring July 2013 Lakes Appreciation Month.
These letters asked each Governor to affirm "the importance of lakes for our drinking water, energy production, food production, and for aesthetic and recreational value." In addition to requesting a proclamation NALMS also asked each Governor to consider promoting Lakes Appreciation Month through the following actions:

- by working with their state agencies, legislature, and key environmental groups to secure or maintain funding for lake programs that help protect their local lakes.
- and by reaching out to congressional delegates of their state and asking that they initiate and/or support legislation on the national level that protects and funds lake programs.
COLORADO
John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado, declared
July 2013 Colorado Lakes Awareness Month on July 1, 2013.
ILLINOIS
Pat Quinn, Governor of the State of Illinois, declared
July 2013 Lakes Appreciation Month on June 3, 2013.
NEVADA
Brian Sandoval, Governor of the State of Nevada, declared
July 2013 Lakes Appreciation Month on May 20, 2013.
OHIO
John R. Kasich, Governor of the State of Ohio, declared
July 2013 Lakes Appreciation Month on July 1, 2013.
