Calgary, AB, Canada - May 2012 - Current NALMS President Al Sosiak, on behalf of NALMS members and in accord with many of NALMS past presidents, has sent a letter detailing NALMS' concern over the imminent closure of the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) near Kenora, Ontario and to urge the Government of Canada to reconsider its decision to close the research facility. The letter states that the "Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) is a rare resource not only in Canada but throughout the world, as a dedicated research facility for ecosystem-scale experimental investigations and long-term monitoring of ecosystem processes" and that the "closure of the ELA will adversely affect our mission to foster the management and protection of lakes and reservoirs."
