Professional Certification Committee Description

Objective

The Certification Committee manages the Certified Lake Manager and Certified Lake Professional program. This program recognizes individuals who demonstrate the appropriate level of training and experience in lake management (CLM, which makes management decisions) or supportive lake science (CLP, typically supplying lab or related support services). The purpose of this recognition is twofold: 1) Acknowledge that an individual possesses the proper background to perform the associated tasks, and 2) Promote continuing education for professionals to advance the science of lake management and the proficiency of its practitioners.

Organization

The President appoints the committee chair(s). Chairs select members, who must themselves be a CLM or CLP. There is no limit to the number of members who may serve on the committee, but enough are needed to provide valid feedback and voting on new applications, with ten to twelve (10-12) as a recommended number. The Chairs send applications to committee members for review in accordance with program guidelines, which are on the NALMS website. The committee will also review renewal applications. Benefits for a CLM or CLP are provided through this committee and the NALMS office.

Activities and Procedures

The committee is responsible for review of applications and generation of benefits for approved CLMs or CLPs. The application is a standard form for either new certification or recertification, the latter of which is required every three (3) years. Committee members are asked to complete a review and vote on acceptance, and may be asked to assist in checking references or reviewing technical reports filed in support of the application.

Benefits vary and few are standardized. A CLM or CLP may be entitled to discounts and is often sent technical information and referrals that come to the attention of the chairs or NALMS office. Each CLM or CLP has contact information and, at their discretion, a photograph and professional biography posted on the NALMS website. A CLM or CLP receives a plaque and a pin, and may receive other recognition and opportunities for continuing education or professional advancement as deemed appropriate by the committee, with the approval of the NALMS Board or its designated agent(s).
